A tornado caused severe damage in Fürstenwalde in the Oder-Spree district on Wednesday evening. According to the fire department, three people sustained minor injuries.
Houses were damaged, the roof of a daycare centre was torn off and numerous trees were uprooted in the area. Pieces of roofing are said to have been blown up to 600 meters away. Firefighters were on the scene throughout the night trying to clear the streets. Cleanup efforts are still underway.
The German Weather Service (DWD) has now confirmed that a tornado struck Fürstenwalde/Spree in Brandenburg. “The event in Fürstenwalde was undoubtedly a tornado,” the DWD told the German Press Agency (dpa). This has now been confirmed by several videos circulating on social media.
The European Severe Weather Database also confirmed it as a tornado and indicated its intensity as an IF1 on the internationally used Fujita scale. IF1 is the third of nine tornado strength levels. According to the scale, wind speeds of an IF1 tornado can reach around 150 kilometres per hour.
