What a career! Brett Dean spent 14 years as a violist with Berliner Philharmoniker before embarking on a highly successful career as a composer.
Now, he returns to his former orchestra as Composer in Residence.
To launch his residency, Dean takes the podium himself to present a program rich in evocative sonorities: Conversations with Schumann explores the complex inner world of the Romantic composer; And Once I Played Ophelia offers a touching portrait of Hamlet’s beloved; and Beggars and Angels derives its musical tension from the contrast between earthly and celestial beings. An arrangement of a work by Debussy rounds out this spiritual program.
